Got a water leak or burst pipe?

Got a water leak and don't know where it is?

Many of the water leaks we attend to are found near, or around the water meter and near the reticulation valve.

At this property in Eaton, the reticulation valve was leaking and needed replacing.

So we replaced the valve, along with some of the pipework connection onto it.

In this instance, there is still a further leak on the retic line, so the retic is isolated, ready for the client to arrange repairs with a retic specialist.

Water leaks are not always easy to locate...

Some water leaks go un-noticed for quite some time, until your water bill is received or your water company lets you know that the water usage is high.

How can I check if I have a water leak or burst pipe?

  1. Check your water meter

    1. Make sure all water is turned off in the home, including indoor and outdoor taps, toilets, dishwashers and washing machines.

    2. Read your water meter to see if the numbers are changing at all.

    3. If you cant tell, take a photo of the meter reading and come back 1 hour later(without turning any water on) to see if the numbers have changed.

    4. If the numbers have moved, you may need to call your plumber to investigate.

  2. Check your toilets are not running water

    1. Sometimes it is hard to tell, but indications of a leaking toilet may include; flush noises when you haven't used it, constantly refilling, leaking in or around the toilet and cistern.

    2. Toilet paper test your toilet. Hold a piece of toilet paper at the back of the toilet (before using) and see if it becomes damp. If so, your toilet may have a slight leak and you may need your plumber to inspect.

  3. Check in your cupboards and around your appliances

    1. Check under your sinks and basins for leaks or dampness. You can touch the pipes gently to check they are not damp or leaking.

    2. If you have flexi pipes, check that they are not freying or rusting.

    3. Check to make sure your washing machine taps are not leaking (as these are often always turned on).

  4. Check around your home and garden

    1. Check for unusual or extra greenery including nice long patches of grass or weeds.

    2. Check for dampness on internal walls behind indoor wet areas and indoor areas that have an external tap on the outside.

    3. Check your ceilings for water marks.

    4. Check outdoor taps are turning off properly without the hose connected.

    5. Check for dampness and water bubbling up on the outside walls, brickpaving/concrete near the home and any pipes that may come up into the home.

    6. Check your hot water unit pipework, water filters and any other appliances you have around the home.

Still can't locate the leak?

If you find yourself with what appears to be a major water leak - turn your water main meter off until a plumber can attend, locate and make repairs. Your water meter is generally located at the front of your property on either side of your home. Turn the handle so it fully isolates the home.
